Grade philosophy essays with AI
Argumentative essays, text commentaries, IB and AP-style timed writing: Correxio reads your students' papers, handwritten or digital, and proposes a score for each criterion of your rubric, which you review before anything else.
What changes for your philosophy papers
A philosophy essay is long, has to be read from start to finish, and is judged on how it frames a problem, builds an argument and uses its sources. Correxio does not decide for you: it prepares a criterion-by-criterion reading that you take over in review.
Your criteria, not its own
Analysis of the question, thesis, development of the argument, counterarguments, use of thinkers and texts: each criterion of your rubric gets its points, adjustable in quarter points, and a description of what you expect. The AI scores against that grid, not against some general idea of a good essay.
A justification per criterion
For each criterion, the AI explains the score it proposes, then writes a two- or three-sentence overall comment. Keep it, qualify it or rewrite it entirely.
Remarks where they belong
Annotations are placed on the scan, at the passage they concern: two concepts confused, a missing step in the argument, a thinker name-dropped rather than used, but also a well-drawn distinction. Move them, edit them or add your own.
Find the argument on the page
When reviewing, clicking a criterion scrolls the paper to where the student addresses it: less page-turning through an eight-page essay.
Blind grading
The student's name is masked before the AI reads the paper, so every essay is read on its own merits. You can reveal names for the whole class when you review.
A stack of philosophy essays graded in four steps
The same flow for an in-class text commentary or a full set of timed essays.
Upload the prompt
The essay question or the passage to comment on, as a PDF, a photo or a Word file. While you import the papers, the AI drafts a rubric.
Adjust the rubric
Edit the criteria and describe what you expect: the useful conceptual distinctions, the kind of problem to bring out, what a text commentary must account for. You can attach notes on the expected answer as a reference.
Import the papers
PDF scans, or photos taken with your phone after scanning a QR code on screen. Crooked photos are straightened automatically.
Review and export
Read each paper beside the proposed scores, adjust what needs adjusting and confirm. Then export the grades as CSV and the annotated papers as PDF.
Your questions about philosophy essays
Can AI grade a philosophy essay?
It can propose a score based on the criteria you write, with a justification for each one. It does not replace your judgment of what makes a piece of thinking good: on an essay, its score is a starting point for your review, and nothing is exported without your approval.
How do I get scores close to my own?
By making your rubric explicit. “Thesis: 4 points” leaves the AI to interpret; “4 points if the question is turned into a problem between two defensible positions, 2 points if it is merely restated” tells it what you expect. The more precise the criteria, the closer the proposed scores.
Are long, dense papers read properly?
The AI reads every handwritten page of a paper directly, in one go. Very cramped writing or a blurry scan can still mislead it: a sharp, well-framed scan and a careful review remain necessary.
Can I use it for IB or AP-style practice exams?
Yes: type in the assessment criteria you apply to the exam, and every practice paper is scored against them. Students get a PDF of their paper with annotations and an overall comment, showing where their argument gave way.
How much does grading a set of essays cost?
Usage is counted per graded page: an essay written on eight handwritten pages counts as 8 pages. The prompt, reference notes and rubric are not counted. The free plan includes 30 pages a month to try it, paid plans 250 or 500.
