Grade handwritten essays with AI
Argumentative essays, literary analysis, reading comprehension, narrative writing: Correxio reads your students' papers, handwritten or digital, and proposes a score for each criterion of your rubric.
What changes for your essay grading
An essay is rarely graded question by question: you assess a thesis, the evidence behind it, organization and conventions. Correxio follows the criteria you set, and leaves you the final word on everything that takes judgment.
A criteria-based rubric
Thesis, use of evidence, organization, conventions: each criterion of your rubric gets its points, adjustable in quarter points, and a description of what you expect. The more precise that description, the closer the proposed score.
A reason behind every score
For each criterion, the AI explains the score it proposes, then writes a two- or three-sentence overall comment. Keep it, edit it or rewrite it: your version is the one on the paper the student gets back.
Comments in the margin
Remarks are placed on the scan, next to the passage they concern: a claim with no support, a quote left unexplained, but also a strong transition. Move them, delete them or add your own.
Grammar and spelling, if your rubric counts them
Add a conventions criterion and the AI scores it like the others, flagging the errors it spots on the paper. It is not a precise error count: for that, your review decides.
Blind grading
The student's name is masked before the AI reads the paper, so every essay is read on its own merits. You can reveal names for the whole class when you review.
A stack of essays graded in four steps
The same flow for a short reading response in sixth grade or a timed literary analysis in high school.
Upload the prompt
The text and the instructions, as a PDF, a photo or a Word file. While you import the papers, the AI drafts a rubric, criterion by criterion.
Adjust the rubric
Edit the criteria, split the points and describe what you expect: a clear thesis, two pieces of evidence per paragraph, a counterargument. You can attach a model answer as a reference.
Import the papers
PDF scans, or photos taken with your phone after scanning a QR code on screen. Crooked photos are straightened automatically.
Review and export
Clicking a criterion scrolls the paper to the right passage. Confirm or correct each score, then export the grades as CSV and the annotated papers as PDF to hand back.
Your questions about grading essays
Can AI really grade an essay?
It grades the paper against the criteria you write: understanding of the text, strength of the argument, organization, conventions. It does not guess your expectations, it applies them. On matters of taste, such as voice or the subtlety of an interpretation, its score stays a proposal: that is exactly what your review is for.
What if a student's handwriting is hard to read?
The AI reads the handwritten pages directly, which works well for most middle and high school handwriting. Very cramped writing or a blurry scan can still mislead it, just as they would slow down any grader: a sharp scan and a careful review remain necessary.
Can I use my department's rubric?
Yes: type your existing rubric into Correxio, criterion by criterion, with the points and descriptors you already use. Every paper in the batch is scored against that same grid, from the first essay to the last.
What about papers already marked by hand?
If a paper carries marks from an earlier, separate grading, the AI ignores them and grades the student's own work only. A criterion the student left out scores zero.
How much does grading a class set of essays cost?
Usage is counted per graded page: 30 students each handing in four handwritten pages make 120 pages. The prompt, model answer and rubric are not counted. The free plan includes 30 pages a month to try it, paid plans 250 or 500.
