Grade physics and chemistry papers with AI

Problems, calculations with units, chemical equations, diagrams: Correxio reads your students' papers, handwritten or digital, and proposes a score for each rubric criterion.

Built for physics and chemistry

What changes for your physics and chemistry tests

In physics and chemistry, the right number is not enough: you want the setup, the equation, the substitution, the units and sensible significant figures. Correxio grades along the breakdown you set, from middle school to AP-level work.

  • ✓

    Method and answer, scored separately

Each rubric criterion carries its own points, adjustable in quarter points. Add one criterion for the equation, one for the substitution, one for the units: the AI splits the score accordingly and explains every point it gives or takes away.

  • ✓

    Units and significant figures

If your rubric says a missing unit or an answer reported to eight decimal places costs a quarter point, the AI applies it to every paper, just as strictly on the last one as on the first.

  • ✓

    Formulas and equations, properly typeset

Comments, justifications and the overall feedback write fractions, powers of ten, roots and subscripts in real notation, on screen and in the PDF handed back to the student: a balanced equation stays readable, and so does a value in scientific notation.

  • ✓

    Diagrams and graphs in view

The AI reads each page as an image: it sees the circuit diagram, the free-body diagram, the hand-drawn graph or the data table, and can take them into account if your rubric covers them.

  • ✓

    Your answer key as reference

Attach your answer key if you have one: the AI uses it as a reference for the expected values, while still scoring strictly against the rubric. A question left blank scores zero instead of borrowing credit from the rest of the paper.

In practice

A physics or chemistry test graded in four steps

The same flow for a short quiz or a full unit test.

  1. 01

    Upload the test

As a PDF, a photo or a Word file, data and figures included. While you import the papers, the AI drafts a rubric, question by question.

  2. 02

    Adjust the rubric

Split the points as you would on paper and spell out what you expect: the equation used, the unit conversion, the final value, the conclusion drawn from the data.

  3. 03

    Import the papers

PDF scans, or photos taken with your phone after scanning a QR code; a crooked photo is straightened automatically. The student's name is masked before grading.

  4. 04

    Review and export

Clicking a question scrolls the paper to where the student answered it. Adjust a score or a comment, confirm the paper, then export the grades as CSV and the annotated papers as PDF.

Your questions about physics and chemistry papers

Can the AI read handwritten calculations and units?

Yes: equations, substitutions, powers of ten and compound units are read like the rest of the paper. As with any handwriting, quality depends on the scan and on legibility: a sharp, well-framed photo gives the best results, and truly illegible writing stays illegible for the AI as it does for you.

Can I take off points for a missing unit or too many significant figures?

Yes, if your rubric says so. Write for example “0.25 point for the unit, 0.25 point for a sensible number of significant figures” in the criterion's description: the more explicit the rubric, the more reliable the proposed score.

What about diagrams, graphs and best-fit lines?

The AI sees the whole page, diagrams included, and can judge whether a circuit has the right components or a graph has the expected shape. For a slope read off a graph or a line where drawing precision matters, check the proposed score when reviewing: that is the kind of point a human eye judges better.

Can Correxio grade lab work?

Only the written part: a lab report, written answers, a data table. Hands-on skills and the experiment itself don't show on paper and are out of the AI's reach.

How much does grading a physics or chemistry test cost?

Usage is counted per graded page: 30 students each handing in a double sheet (4 pages) make 120 pages. The test, the answer key and the rubric are not counted. The free plan includes 30 pages a month to try it, paid plans 250 or 500.
