Grade history and social studies papers with AI
Short answers, document analysis, maps, essays: Correxio reads your middle and high school students' papers, handwritten or digital, and proposes a score for each criterion of your rubric.
What changes for your history and geography papers
A history or geography test mixes very different tasks: facts and dates to recall, a source to analyze, a map to complete, an argument to write. Each one is graded on its own criteria, and that is exactly the logic Correxio follows.
A rubric for each kind of task
For an essay, spell out what you expect: a clear thesis, organized paragraphs, specific evidence, accurate dates and places. The AI scores each criterion out of the points you give it, in quarter points, and explains its proposal.
Maps and diagrams too
The AI reads each page as an image: it sees the map, sketch or diagram the student drew or completed, and can check for a title, an organized key or the expected labels if your rubric asks for them.
Document analysis, step by step
Identifying a source, pulling out information, explaining it with background knowledge, assessing its significance: break the prompt into criteria and the score shows exactly where the student lost points.
Comments on the paper
The AI places its remarks right where they apply: a wrong date, a well-chosen example, a claim with no evidence behind it. You move, edit or delete them, or draw your own.
Straight to the answer
When reviewing, clicking a question scrolls the paper to where the student answered it, even when the essay starts at the bottom of page 3.
A history test graded in four steps
The same flow for a quick map quiz or a full unit test.
Upload the test
As a PDF, a photo or a Word file, sources included. While you import the papers, the AI drafts a rubric from it, question by question.
Adjust the rubric
Split the points and describe what you expect: key concepts, dates and places, quality of the argument, map elements. Attach your answer key if you have one: the AI uses it as a reference, while still scoring against the rubric.
Import the papers
PDF scans, or photos taken with your phone after scanning a QR code; crooked photos are straightened. The student's name is masked before the AI reads the paper.
Review and export
Confirm or correct each score and comment, then export the scores as CSV and the annotated papers, with their overall comment, as PDF to hand back.
Your questions about history and geography papers
Can the AI grade an essay?
Yes, as long as your rubric says what you expect. The more explicit the criteria (thesis, organization, specific evidence, dates and places, vocabulary), the more accurate the proposed score and the more useful its explanation. On a long piece of writing, reviewing remains essential: you are the final judge of how well an argument holds together.
What about maps, sketches and diagrams?
The AI sees the map as it appears on the scan and can take it into account: title, key, symbols, place names. The precision of a line or a location is harder to judge on an image than on paper, so check those points when reviewing, especially if the map is in color and the scan is black and white.
Can I grade a document-based question?
Yes, if your rubric breaks it into criteria: thesis, use of the documents, outside evidence, sourcing, reasoning. The AI sees every page, documents included if they are part of what you upload, and proposes a score for each criterion with its justification.
Some of my students' handwriting is hard to read. Is that a problem?
The AI reads handwriting directly from the scan, but very poor handwriting or a blurry photo makes the reading less reliable, just as it would for a human grader. A sharp, well-framed photo gives the best results, and the paper stays in front of you throughout the review.
How much does grading a class set cost?
Usage is counted per graded page: 30 students each handing in a double sheet scanned front and back make 120 pages. The test, the sources, the answer key and the rubric are not counted. The free plan includes 30 pages a month to try it, paid plans 250 or 500.
